“One of the country’s most internationally respected artists, with a practice recognized for its critical imagination, formal ingenuity and deep commitment to social enquiry”, such is how the jury described the artist selected for the Canadian Pavilion at next year’s Venice Biennale - Stan Douglas.

A leading video artist with a foot in the photography world, Douglas’ installations frequently look towards the marginalised, utilising tropes from Hollywood filmmaking. His abstract photography practice earned him the prestigious Hasselblad Award in 2016, whilst his video work has already featured in Venice’s main exhibitions four times; most recently, 2019 saw the debut of Döppelganger, his video installation about female astronauts experiencing alienation (currently on view at David Zwirner Gallery in New York before coming to the Victoria Miro Gallery in London later in January).

A curator is yet to be announced for the pavilion commissioned by the National Gallery of Canada in Ontario, but the 2021 Biennale’s overall Artistic Director was revealed last week as Cecilia Alemani.
