Open Call: Curatorial School of the Inaugural Bukhara Biennial

Article
The Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) and Delfina Foundation have announced an open call for early-career curators to apply for the BBBB Curatorial School, a collaborative programme for shared learning, critical thinking, and long-term professional relationships. Commissioned by Gayane Umerova and led by Bukhara Biennial Artistic Director Diana Campbell, the programme offers unique insight into the inner workings of a major biennial.

Taking place in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, BBBB Curatorial School will bring together six curators, three from Uzbekistan and three from across Asia, to explore new approaches to curating and exhibition-making.

The four-part programme culminates in spring 2026 with a major international exhibition co-curated by all participants, at a yet-to-be-announced venue.

Chapter 1 (16–25 Sept 2025) - Biennial introduction with exhibitions and heritage site visits, artist and curator networking, lectures and case studies on generative curating and commissioning practices.

Chapter 2 (1–9 Oct 2025) – Context & Collaboration: Central Asia Symposium, early concept presentations, theme development.

Chapter 3 (1–8 Nov 2025) – Mentorship & Exhibition Development: work with curatorial mentors, studio visits in Tashkent, exhibition design meetings.

Chapter 4 (16–22 Nov 2025) – Reflection & Review: biennial closing events, curatorial critique workshops.

Applicants must be under 30 years old. Uzbek applicants may be based either in Uzbekistan or abroad, while applicants from Asia (including West Asia) must currently reside in Asia. Attendance at all in-person chapters is required, as is availability to work on the exhibition in spring 2026.

Selected curators will receive mentorship from international curators and gain access to BBBB’s network of artists and curators. The programme covers roundtrip travel to Bukhara, accommodation during the programme chapters, along with two international site visits to the 2026 exhibition venue. Participants will also receive a curatorial honorarium for developing a new exhibition. Applications must be submitted online via this form by 19 August 2025, 23:59 (BST). The selection process will be conducted by a panel including Bukhara Biennial Artistic Director Diana Campbell, representatives of the ACDF, and Delfina Foundation. Further details will be announced in autumn 2025.

Bukhara Biennial is a new contemporary art initiative taking place from September 5 to November 20, 2025, across newly restored historic landmarks in the city of Bukhara, a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art.
