Our identity is moulded by our surroundings, our encounters, our travels, and the communities that welcome us. Ludovic Nkoth, an artist originally from Cameroon now living in New York, found himself drawn to the symbiotic influence that operates between art and space, during a stay in Paris, an exploration of Le Corbusier's archives, and an encounter with a specific time and place. He imagined how, in other times, other people might have lived in Maison La Roche.
The result of this exploration, conducted in collaboration with the Massimo de Carlo gallery, is currently on display until the 25th of November 2023 in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.
Let’s chat with the artist.
The genesis
“I spent a few months digging through his archive and I started understanding the way he uses colour, forms and light around and within the building. I wanted to respond to that with my works.”
The hanging process
“While we were hanging the works in the different rooms we were very intentional on how we could play with storytelling while walking through the house.”
The experience
“I think this exhibition will have a long-term impact on me, especially with the way I approach an exhibition as a whole. This felt more holistic because of the intentionality I felt was owed to the space. Next time I install a future show, I think I’ll be more curious to explore different ways of showing the works in order to create a more symbiotic experience within its space.”
