Erin Holly, a painter redefining the body

Article
“I try to ‘undo’ or ‘unlearn’ the notion of being housed in a body". These are the words used by the british artist Erin Holly to introduce her work.

The British transgender artist has been invited by the PDP Gallery to display a selection of oils on canvas for her first solo exhibition in Paris from the 20th of April to the 9th of May 2023.

Through her mostly figurative work in "Gatekeepers," Erin Holly highlights a "relationship between the painted image and the materiality of oil painting" which she refers to as "a metaphor for my trans identity".

On canvas or in public spaces with her murals, the artist trained at the City and Guilds School of Art in London depicts a heteronormative world through the representation of a home and the imagination that surrounds it. She shows it to undo it.

Her commitment goes beyond her visual art as she also supports young members of the LGBTQ+ community, pushed to the margins of society, and deemed non-compliant. Erin Holly breaks fears as well as taboos and enables her artwork to be a space to meet and talk.

The PDP Gallery is present in temporary spaces and fairs, including the Urban Art Fair recently held in Paris, which was sold out for the works of Inigo Sesma presented on the occasion. Mathieu and Alexandre Latscha’s PDP Gallery has also recently partnered with the city of Pézenas (France) to create a series of murals, featuring Mohamed Lghacham among the artists associated with the initiative.

Discover "Gatekeepers" at 35 rue Quincampoix in Paris until the 9th of May.
