Weibo and WeChat to welcome the Louvre

Article
In 2014, there were 474,000 Chinese visitors to the Louvre; a figure only exceeded by the number of Americans visitors. At the chateau of Versailles however, the Chinese represent 11% of visitors, on par with Americans.

HAPPENING

In order to nurture this promising clientele, the Louvre, the Centre des Monuments nationaux and the Chateau of Versailles have announced that they will be the first “European museum and cultural heritage institutions present” on popular Chinese social networking sites, including Weibo (200 million active subscribers) and We Chat (600 million).  Although the chateau of Versailles is only on WeChat at present, the Musée d’Orsay has announced their new venture into the Chinese networking sites.

HAPPENING

The Louvre’s press release states that Weibo “proposes information on museums, monuments, art works and events, enriched by videos, photos and questionnaire-games,” whilst WeChat, using this same content service, is complemented by practical information on individual institutions, as well as providing GPS, a downloading service and games.
