The laureate of the first ever Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize has been announced to be the painter Jorge Queiroz for his painting "Duende".

The Lisboa native has been picked out from a selection of 30 artists from Portugal and its diaspora by a jury composed of 19 judges with world renowned names such as Ai Wei Wei or Joana Vasconcelos.

"It was a wonderful and very big surprise, to have won the 2022 Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize, I am very happy. This piece was made for the writing of a text of the Duende for a literary conference in Madrid. The purpose of both this Prize and the Students Prize is noble and highly commended." Queiroz commented following his consecration.

The award, promoted by the Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF), has rewarded Queiroz for his work and earned him the prize of €25,000. In addition to that, his and the other finalists' works are going on tour through Portugal, starting at the Palácio das Artes in Porto on 13 April before heading to Lisbon on 27 May and Algarve starting 22 June, ending on 15 August.

The other finalists' works have been put for auction with reserve prices ranging from €1,700 to €24,000 with half of the proceedings going to the artists and the other to SAF that will fund art programs for children who need it most.
