For this second edition of the Norval Sovereign African Art Prize, five judges have chosen to reward Malian artist Famakan Magassa for his painting "La Ballade Noctambule", a work that will earn him the grand total of 500.000 South African Rand (€27,000).

30 artists have entered the competition, one of them will also be the recipient of a popular vote worth 25.000 Rand (€1300), for which anyone can vote on the Prize's website.

Created in 2021 in South Africa, this annual award, the fruit of a collaboration between the Sovereign African Art Prize and the Norval Foundation, seeks to give a broad platform to African contemporary artists. By bringing international attention to them the prize hopes to build interest for artists in this part of the world and raise funds for the artists. Artworks can also be acquired through an online auction set up in partnership with Sotheby's.

Last year, the prize was given to South African artist Bonolo Kavula, while the popular vote went to René Tavares.

The jury is made up of the following prominent art world figures:

Bonolo Kavula

Tim Marlow

Marie-Ann Yemsi

Janine Gaëlle Dieudji
