Offering an in-depth look at more than 70 works from their collection, from 1980 to the present, the Museum of Modern Art in New York has launched “What Is Contemporary Art”?, a free online course available on Coursera.

The course, created by MoMA’s department of education, is divided into five themes: Media from Television to the Internet, Territories & Transit, Materials & Making, Agency, and Power. Within them, learners can explore artworks including portraits made by artificial intelligence, 3D-printed sculptures and performances in a factory, amongst much else. In addition, the course features four original new films made with Sheila Hicks, Arthur Jafa, Pope.L and Rael San Fratello, as well as 30 audio and email interviews with artists in the MoMA collection, such as Amanda Williams, Sheela Gowda and Xiao Lu.

With a focus on art from the last decade, learners will develop a deepened understanding of artistic practices today directly from artists, architects and designers themselves. Speaking on their creative processes, materials and inspiration, they will help participants in the course discover the ways in which they respond to the pressing questions of our time.
