"We are honored that Magnum chose the High, and Atlanta, as its first U.S. host for Live Lab, and we are delighted to bring this project to the city," Rand Suffolk, Nancy and Holcombe T. Green, Jr., director of the High, told Broadway World. "This collaboration is a testament to the strength of our photography department and our commitment to supporting the creation of new work and offering innovative ways for our audience to connect with their museum and the greater community. We can't wait to see what the photographers create."
Over a two-week period, American photographer Carolyn Drake and South African artists Lindokuhle Sobekwa and Mikhael Subotzky will create a new body of photographs, realised in the “lab” at the museum in the lobby of the High’s Anne Cox Chambers Wing, open to the public to observe the creative process at select times. The residency will close with a pop-up exhibition from March 28 to April 19 of 2020.
The artists were provided with a brief of the city, touching on its history, economy and its unique position as the crossroads of the new South. The residency essentially takes the form of a “photographic jam session”, for which the High will serve as the base of operations for editing, creating and sequencing, whilst the photographs themselves will be shot in the city and metro area.
