Hopper, De Kooning, René Magritte: downpour of records in New York

 

Edward Hopper’s painting, Chop Suey (1929), fetched nearly $92m fees included at Christie’s, over double the previous record – set at $40.4m in 2013. Willem de Kooning’s Woman as Landscape (1955), also sold in the Ebsworth collection sale, took $68.9m, breaking the $66.3m record set in 2016. The sale also saw Jackson Pollock’s Composition with Red Strokes (1950) fetch $55.4m. Read further via artnet.

Meanwhile, at Sotheby’s, it was René Magritte who was the star. Less than a year after La Corde sensible was sold for $17.9m, a painting by the artist was bought for $26.8m at the Sotheby’s New York sales. Seven collectors bid for Le Principe du plaisir. New galleries for Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Becher couple estate

 

Star of contemporary creation, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, will no longer be represented solely by the Victoria Miro Gallery (London and Venice). David Zwirner – based in New York, London and Hong Kong – will also be representing the American artist (b.1983). Read further via Artnews.

 

In addition to the Fraenkel Gallery, Conrad Fischer and Sprüth Magers, the famous German photographer couple, Bernd and Hilla Becher, will have their estate represented by the Paula Cooper Gallery. The Becher duo are known for their shots of industrial installations, and will be the subject of a solo show in 2020. More information available here.

Sondra Perry wins the Nam June Paik Award 2018

 

Following in the footsteps of Lawrence Abu Hamdan (2016), Camille Henrot (2014) and Cevdet Erek (2012), the young American artist Sondra Perry has been awarded the Nam June Paik Award 2018, accompanied by prize-money of €25,000, by the Kunststiftung NRW. The artist, known for her video work using cutting-edge technology, was up against Andreas Angelidakis, melanie Bonajo, Antoine Ctala and Hanna Lippard in the final. Read further here.
