In today’s news: the world of painting sees a sad death and an exciting opportunity for a new record.

Egyptian artist Chant Avedissian passes away

The artist, whose art “unifies Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and dynastic monuments with pictures of modern national heroes, admired politicians, popular singers and actors”, has passed away at the age of 67. As well as his portraits, Avedissian had developed a more abstract practice influenced by his time at the Aga Khan Foundation, where he rubbed shoulders with the architect Hassan Fathy.

His works feature notably in the collections of the British Museum and the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. Chant Avedissian was represented by the Sabrina Amrani gallery (Madrid).

A new record for Richard Diebenkorn?

On November 15 in New York, Christie’s will be auctioning off Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park #137 (1985), valued at between $18m and $22m.

From Mary Tyler Moore and Dr S. Robert Levine’s collection, the monumental painting is one of the last created by the artist in the Ocean Park series. Last May, the auction house sold Ocean Park #126 for $23.9m – but the painting’s dimensions were much smaller. Read further via Art Market Monitor.
