Opacity of the art industry is Going, Going, Gone thanks to new board game

Article
For a casual art-fan or market outsider, the art industry can often seem inaccessible, or at least mind-bogglingly complex.

So, in comes the new board game from Laurence King Publishing - Going, Going, Gone! - offering a peek into the high-stakes fine art world from the comfort of one’s own sofa. Players can imagine themselves in the shoes of elite collectors such as Roman Abramovich and Mohammed Afkhami, but without burning a million-dollar (or more) hole in their pockets.

The aim of the game is to “travel the world as an art collector scouring the auction houses, visiting art fairs, and making private deals in search of elusive artworks to complete your collection”, with the winner being the player with the most valuable collection and the most spare cash at the end of the game.

Unlike more retro art games such as Masterpiece, the artworks featured in the game are mostly fictional: “We’ll use real artists, but we’ll make up artworks that we wish they had done or wish they would do,” explained one of the game editors, Donald Dinwiddie, to Artsy.
