Barbara Hammer, feminist and lesbian activist (1939-2019)

 


The American artist, pioneer of queer cinema, had been fighting cancer. Last October, she held a performance at the Whitney Museum entitled The Art of Dying, or Palliative Art Making in the Age of Anxiety.

The artist had been the subject of several big retrospectives in recent years, at the Modern Art museum in New York (2010), the Tate Modern in London, and at Paris' Jeu de Paume (both 2012). More information available via Artnews.
