Nan Goldin to refuse retrospective if Sackler family donation is accepted

Heavily involved in the fight against opioids – extremely addictive drugs available on prescription at pharmacies –, Nan Goldin is taking a stand.

Having been affected by addiction problems herself, the American photographer is fighting against artistic institutions accepting financing from implicated pharmaceutical companies. Thus, after leading a group of activists at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, the artist has announced that she will refuse a retrospective at the prestigious National Portrait Gallery if the London institution accepts a £1m donation from the Sackler family. The SFMoMA to sell a $35m Rothko piece to finance new acquisitions

The artwork will be put up for sale by Sotheby’s this May, in New York. The 1960 Untitled painting has been valued at between $35m and $50m.

Neal Benezra, Helen and Charles Schwab Director of SFMoMA, said: “With a spirit of experimentation, diversity of thought, and openness to new ways of telling stories, we are rethinking our exhibitions, collections, and education programs to enhance accessibility and expand our commitment to a global perspective, while sustaining our dedication to Bay Area and California art. Untitled, 1960 is being sold in order to broadly diversify SFMoMA’s collection, enhance its contemporary holdings, and address art historical gaps in order to continue to push boundaries and embrace fresh ideas.”
