This year’s theme — “Time Travel” — invites artists to draw inspiration from the city’s past, present and future. Exhibited works will be presented across a series of “episodes”: Ancient Greece, Chinatown, Children, Moments from the Future, Flashback and Software. Artists will contribute with both existing and new, site-specific commissioned works.
Alongside the traditional exhibition venues — Tate Liverpool, FACT, Open Eye Gallery and Bluecoat — artworks and installations will take over a number of the city’s iconic sites: The Cains Brewery, the former ABC Cinema and Clarence Dock in North Liverpool as well as streets, pubs, hotels, restaurants and supermarkets.
Among the Biennial highlights are a performance by artist Koki Tanaka — who will recreate the iconic 1985 children's’ strike against the government proposed Youth Training Scheme — and an installation by Italian Lara Favaretto, whose ambitious work will involve draining a dock in the north of Liverpool and filling it with casts of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures.
Also showing during Liverpool Biennial 2016 are the John Moores Painting Prize at Walker Art Gallery, Bloomberg New Contemporaries at Bluecoat, and the Biennial Fringe. The full list of participating artists is available on the Biennial website.

Liverpool Biennial announces 2016 program
Director Sally Tallant has announced the full program for the 2016 Liverpool Biennial, the UK’s largest contemporary art festival. The festival’s ninth edition, running from July 9 through October 16, will feature works by 42 international artists alongside ten associate artists from the north of England.
