Centre Pompidou and The Brussels Museum of Contemporary Art to team up

Further details of the ongoing project to renovate a former Citroën warehouse in the heart of Brussels into a landmark museum of contemporary art have been unveiled as the city’s Museum of Contemporary Art Project has announced Paris’ Centre Pompidou as its partner.

Rudi Vervoort, the Minister-President of Brussels and the driving force behind the initiative, revealed today that the renovation project, as well as creating a dedicated space to house Belgium’s vast collection of modern and contemporary artwork from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts, will also encompass a museum of contemporary architecture and a multidisciplinary cultural center. Vervoort announced that the Centre Pompidou will be partnered with the project, and will help direct the development of the cultural center.

In a tweet, the Centre Pompidou said it would contribute to the artistic programming of the cultural center, offering its “expertise and ingenuity” to the project. As well as this, the museum will lend part of its 120,000-work collection — only 10% of which is currently on display to the public — to the future Brussels museum.

Vervoot also confirmed that the space within the 30,000 square meter former Citroën warehouse which the Brussels government had previously allocated as housing will now be given over to the cultural center.

The former head of Vervoot’s cabinet, Yves Goldstein, has been appointed to carry out the coming stages of the project. He stated that the museum will open in the next four years, between 2019 and 2020.
