Snapchat to launch Virtual Reality platform featuring Jeff Koons and others

The 173 million users strong social media has announced that it will launch an augmented reality platform that will allow users to visualize art works in AR by using their phones.

Although we know very little ahead of the official launch — set at 3PM (ET) according to Snapchat’s website —  an American reader of TechCrunch, which first reported the news, has leaked a YouTube video detailing a Snapchat partnership with Jeff Koons. Following the launch, works by the artists will be “visible” in locations across New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Toronto, Sydney, London, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.

Snapchat users will have to simply “hold their phones up” in specific locations to “see” the artworks. Fellow artists will also be able to add their own works by simply signing-up. But are the (very) young users of Snapchat really sensitive to contemporary art? We shall see...
