The Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art has a new director

As of January 2018, Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy will be the new director of Rotterdam’s Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. Hernández Chong Cuy, who has served as curator of contemporary art for the Coleccion Patricia Phelps de Cisneros for the past six years — based in New York and Caracas — will succeed to Defne Ayas, who had taken up her post in 2012.

The newly appointed director, who graduated from New York’s Bard College in 2000, has also held previous positions at Art in General, the Americas Society and the CCS Bard in New York. She was also responsible for organizing exhibitions at Paris’ Kadist Art Foundation, at Buenos Aires’ Museum of Latin American Art (MALBA) or at the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius, Lithuania.

The Witte de With Center defines itself as an “agile, responsive, innovative, and experimental [institution] offering a dynamic alternative to traditional museum models.”

Recently, the institution has announced that it will no longer be named after the colonial admiral Witte Corneliszoon de With, who led violent expeditions in Asia on behalf of the Dutch East India Company.
