Whilst the call is open to all artists, regardless of their age, gender, nationality or practice, preference will be given to performative, participatory and interactive works due to the temporary nature of the intervention. The winning project will be installed — or performed — on and around the pedestal of the Lenin monument between May 1 and 17.
Social Contract was inaugurated in 2016 as a project exploring the historical, political and ideological significance of commemorative objects in public spaces — with Lenin’s statue, destroyed in 2013, representing an example of both a symbolic and political downfall in the Ukraine, followed by the “decommunization” of the country and a series of controversial laws signed by the Ukraine president Petro Poroshenko. The project also includes an exhibition, held at IZOLYATSIA, and a public program including workshops, lectures and public discussions.
Previously, artists Cynthia Gutiérrez and Mahmoud Bakhshi intervened on the site with their respective works Inhabiting Shadows (July 9-16, 2016) and Endless Celebration (November 7-21, 2016). Gutiérrez’s performative work invited the audience to step onto the pedestal, thus creating a new, “moving” monument, reflecting on the notions of political agency as well as national identity. Bakhshi presented to a neon installation, alternating the faces of Lenin, the Virgin Mary and Madonna, a sharp commentary on ideology, religion and economy as social constructs.
