In partnership with the Departmental Museum of Asian Art in Nice, the Musée Guimet in Paris will exhibit 65 photographs from its collection from January 21 to April 6 of this year.
The exhibition, named “A train to Yunnan; Trials and tribulations of two Frenchmen in China”, depicts the adventures of Auguste François, who served as Consul in charge of negotiations with the Chinese authorities regarding the creation of the Laokay-Yunnanfu railway line, and Georges-Auguste Marbotte, who joined the project in 1903.

The images capture everyday life of 19th century southern China during the construction of the most complex railway lines in the world. The railway was classed as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in 2013, and connects Laokay on the Indochinese frontier and Yunnan-fu in southern China.
