The University of Melbourne has announced that it is to open a contemporary art museum, thanks to a generous private collector’s donation.

Michael Buxton has handed over his personal collection to the institution. The gift comprises at least 300 works by 53 contemporary Australian artists including work by sculptor Ricky Swallow, photographers Pat Brassington and Tracy Moffat, as well as visual artist Patricia Piccinini. The total estimated value of this donation is around €6.8 million.

The collector is to also finance the construction of a gallery which will become part of the museum on the university campus of Southbank, costing in the region of €10.8 million. This gallery will be named the Michael Buxton Centre of Contemporary Art (MBCOCA) in honour of the generous donor and is due to be ready to open at the end of 2017.
