Curator and Art Advisor Adeline Ooi has been named Director of Asia Art Basel and will join the Art Basel executive committee. Her predecessor, Magnus Renfrew stepped down in July 2014 to take up a post at auction house Bonhams.

Ooi’s first task will be to oversee the organization of the third edition of Art Basel Hong Kong which is to take place from March 15 to 17, 2015.

‘‘We wanted someone who we thought could catalyze the growth of the art market across Asia,’’ Marc Spiegler, the director of Art Basel, told The New York Times, ‘‘Asia is by far the most complex art scene that we have in the art world right now… We were looking for someone who understood the complexity of the Asian art scene but has an in-depth knowledge of at least a few of the sub regions.’’ he added.Ooi has said she feels “honored” to have been chosen for the post; she has been responsible for VIP relations at Art Basel for South East Asia for the last two years and in 2008 she co-founded RogueArt, an art advisory agency based in Malaysia. She has also worked for Valentine Willie Fine Art gallery in Kuala Lumpur, the Singapore Art Museum as well as the Queensland Art Gallery in Australia.
