London’s National Portrait Gallery announced today the appointment of Nicholas Cullinan, who is to succeed Sandy Nairne as director.

The appointment marks Cullinan’s return to the UK after a two-year stint at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where he is currently Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. Prior to this, he was Curator of International Modern Art at Tate Modern between 2007 and 2013. At 37 years old, he has curated an illustrious roster of shows, including Cy Twombly, Edvard Munch, and most recently the acclaimed “Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs” at Tate Modern this summer. Pointedly, he began his career as a Visitor Services Assistant at the National Portrait Gallery.
Cullinan is to take up the new post in the spring.
