The Louvre was still the most visited museum in the world in 2014

With 9.3 million visitors, the Louvre attracted the highest number of visitors in the world in 2014, with last year’s results announced by the institution on January 6 2015.

The museum drew crowds from across the globe with 70% of the total visitors coming from outside of France, mainly from the United States, China, Italy, Great-Britain and Brazil.

Young people did not stay away from the museum either. “More than 50% of visitors were under 30 years old, including a high proportion aged between 18 to 25, representing 1.9 million visitors”, announced the Louvre in its press release.

Temporary exhibitions such as “Medieval Morocco, An Empire from Africa to Spain” and “Birth of a Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi” were great successes, whereas permanent collections attracted 100 000 more visitors than in 2013.The year 2014 was also highlighted by the new presentation of the Victory of Samothrace, following the restoration of one of the museums most coveted artworks.
