Sainsbury is the founder of Raven Row, a free contemporary art centre in east London, open since 2009. He has said that his is “honored” to have been selected for this post at the Whitechapel Gallery that he has “long admired”. “It is a key part of the cultural landscape of London and beyond, and I am excited to be participating in its future,” he announced following the news of his nomination.He will be joining the London-based institution during a period of expansion for the centre, with a new digital strategy currently being put in place. The Whitechapel Gallery receives almost half a million visitors per year; in 2015, an abstract art retrospective is to take place featuring works dating from 1915 until the present day, as well as exhibitions dedicated to Christopher Williams and Emily Jacir.
