Cuba, the new Eldorado for American collectors

Article
Ever since the embargo introduced by the United States in 1962, relations with Cuba have been frosty. But a new relationship between the United States and Cuba is now underway, which has attracted much speculation.

The recent easing of diplomatic relations could present new opportunities to Cuban artists, who are highly regarded by American collectors, as highlighted by The New York Times.

The collector Howard Farber explains to The Wall Street Journal “I believe Cuban art has been a best-kept secret among a few collectors and now that Cuba is opening up to us I think more people will discover a genre that’s fresh and great.”

Although the art scene is more or less nonexistent on the island, some American collectors could benefit from the reconciliation between the two countries, united in their hunt to find new treasures in Cuba. Galleries located on the west coast of the United States already propose Cuban art to collectors, often Latin-American in origin.  Michael Connors, PhD, who is a decorative arts specialist, has been organizing themed trips to the island since 2009 which offers visits to ateliers and studios.

Delighted local artists are also benefitting from the ease of exporting their works of art and the quick-developing artistic scene in Cuba.
