Istanbul's Art International postpones its fourth edition to 2017

Co-founders Sandy Angus and Yeşim Avunduk have announced that the fourth edition of Art International — scheduled to run from September 23 through 25 at Istanbul’s Haliç Congress Centre — will now take place in 2017.

Launched in September 2013, Art International — Istanbul’s global contemporary and modern art fair — was conceived as a “cultural bridge” across the global art world, featuring artists and galleries from both the East and the West. Its third edition welcomed 87 galleries from 23 countries, including Victoria Miro, Jérôme Poggi, Galerie du Monde, Aspan Gallery, Galerie Krinzinger and Aicon Gallery.

Angus, CEO of the events company Angus Montgomery, cited the “current challenges of operating in Turkey” and the “concerns of the participating galleries” as the reasons behind the organizers’ decision. Avunduk, also managing director of Art International partner İnterteks — Turkey’s oldest and most prestigious trade show organiser — added that the organizers “will continue to monitor the situation within Turkey closely and very much hope to stage the 4th edition of the fair in 2017”.

While both Angus and Avunduk spoke about the difficulties of providing a fair to match both “Turkey’s burgeoning art market” and the standards of previous editions, concerns over safety following the recent terrorist attacks in Ankara seem to have also played a role in the organizers’ decision.
