A new artist-led space to open in LA to champion under-represented artists

PSSST LA is not even open yet, but it is already gaining a lot of attention. The new space will open its doors in Boyle Heights in Los Angeles in early May.

Housed in a former Thai food distributing plant, measuring 5,000 square feet, PSSST is to feature a multidisciplinary exhibition space, an outdoor area, four artist studios and an office. The organization will also run two residency programmes which will occupy two of the studios, one aimed at Los Angeles County-based artists — the first artist to participate is Guadalupe Rosales — the other dedicated to national and international artists, beginning with artist Jen Rosenblit.

The PSSST project is led by artists Jules Gimbrone and Barnett Cohen, who will occupy the remaining two studios. The artists have expressed a desire to aid under-represented artists: women, people of color, LGBTQ, inviting the public “to participate in a slowing down, a deeper contemplation, and a more invested looking and listening.”

The space was donated to the artists by a generous patron who wishes to remain anonymous. In the future PSSST will take 30% on sales of works produced within their space.

The inaugural exhibition “Everybody! Come Stand on the Altar!” is to take place May 13 through 28, featuring the work of Anna Betbeze, Jesse Fleming, Luis Flores, Deana Lawson, Keaton Macon, K.r.m. Mooney, Barb Smith and Dorian Wood. In June the space will welcome seven artists: Sid M. Dueñas, Lauren Davis Fisher, Lee Relvas, Edie Fake, George Egerton-Warburton, Julie Beaufils and Ellen Schafer, best known for their dramatic walk out on the Roski School of Art and Design last year.
