Architectural waves: Jennifer Caubet at Saint-Céré

Article
The second edition of the Saint-Céré Contemporary Art Festival in France is currently underway, spotlighting the work of Jennifer Caubet, a promising young artist.

It is a passionate collector couple, Evelyne and Jacques Deret, who created the event, coinciding the contemporary art festival with the local art lyrique festival in Saint-Céré. Also the founders of Art [ ] Collector, the Derets wish to promote contemporary French artists or artists residing in France by exhibiting the work in collaboration with their collectors.

It is at the Maison des Consuls where we find the work of Jennifer Caubet. Born in 1982, the artist engages in a reflection on the representation of space and time through her piece Utopia. Caubet invites her audience to react to the waves emitted by the piece as if they were new territories to be discovered. Composed of a series of solar panels, the effect is a blind arcade in stainless steel. The artwork also serves as a wifi hotspot for passers by with a connection powered by the solar panels. Within the Maison des Consuls, Caubet presents a series of graphics which double as essays on the architectonics of waves, representing on paper Utopia’s own waves.
Caubet has been nominated for the 2015 Prix MAIF for her project LA R.A.F — Résidence pour Artistes Fatigués (Residency for Exhausted Artists) which involves the renovation of a bunker in the south of France to be used by artists. This refuge space is entirely submerged during high tide, meaning that these tired artists have to be entirely self sufficient.

Elsewhere at the Espace Orlando at Saint-Jean-Lespinasse, artist and engraver Marie Boralevi exhibits her work alongside the paintings, drawings and engravings of Olivier Moriette.
