What didn't flop at Art Paris

Article
Art lovers, push back the doors of the Grand Palais and discover the latest edition of Art Paris. Yet I warn you, you will not be bowled over by unbridled creativity or the pinnacle of avant-garde creation. The art at this fair is very modest, even if certain surprises pop up here or there, in particular on the stands of Singaporean galleries, this year’s featured country.

As soon as you enter the fair, you are met by Chen Sai Hua Kuan’s monumental sculpture l’écoute reminding us that it is Singapore the pays d’honneur this year. The originality of this fair is indeed the discovery of a new geographic artistic region with each edition. The selection of Singapore coincides perfectly with the inaugural Singapore festival in France, featuring numerous artistic events: visual arts, theatre, music, cinema literature; opening up the art of South asia to all of France.

Artists presented in the section Asian Galleries: Chun Kwang Young and Nyein Chan Su, share the use of explosive color which clings and roars. Yet in the end, that which might seem like a specificity might actually be the framework for the majority of works exhibited across 140 galleries coming from 20 different countries. This allows us however to focus on one artist in particular who is crucial when thinking about the use of color and its autonomy - Carlos Cruz-Diez. The Gimpel & Muller gallery are presenting two of the Venezuelan artist’s physichromie pieces. 92 years old and living in France since the 1960s, Cruz-Diez has pursued his artistic research with malice and humor. A must see!

So, here you have a subjective little visit of the fair, focusing on color. But before you leave, a visit to galerie Francoise Livinnec’s stand will immerse you in the harmony of pure black and white; visit Loïc Le Groumellec’s megaliths from volcanic rocks extracted from the Korean island Choi Jun Kun and gawp at Yang XiaoJian’s abstract calligraphies.
