Matali Crasset: An online influence

Article
Philippe Starck and Matali Crasset are the two most influential French designers on social media according to the annual barometer of Influential Artists carried out by Smiling-People Agency and Linkfluence.

An analysis of Matali Crasset’s net presence discovered a cloud of key words used by the designer. The results are pulled from conversations about Crasset that have taken place on social media. 49 years old, Matali Crasset created her design studio in 1998 housed in a former print room in the working-class district of Belleville in Paris. It was only in 2014, having created two very well received items for the Ikea PS collection, that her work created an online buzz, bringing attention to the brand. A cloud of conversation gathered around her, noting her use of color, her fascination with American Abstract painter Barnett Newman and her desire to invent a design around evolving structures. Key works relate to editors, projects or collections such as Bad Boys.

whosafraidofcolor

It’s a hashtag that I use regularly in reference to a series of four paintings by Barnett Newman from the 1960s, Who’s Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue?
Color is life! I feel like I use color the way it should be used, in Europe it often feels like we’re scared of it, we ban color!

Design

I am an industrial designer, that is what I’m trained to do and my work is becoming more ingrained in this kind of practice. It has become less about bringing form to my materials or the aesthetic, it is more important to bring out, unite and organise links and networks of skills and sociability.

Ikea

Ikea epitomises democratic design. It was a great honor to have been able to collaborate with them.

colette Paris

Without a doubt the most innovative boutique I know. For their opening I sent the book The Empathic Chair to Sarah. It is colette that first presented and commercialized one of my pieces La colonne d’hospitalité Quand jim monte à Paris, brought out by Domeau & Péres, as well as the jewelry collection created by Le Buisson. I love the energy of the store as well as its insatiable curiosity.

Bad boys

Is the name of a series of watches created for the editor of designerbox, with a subscription system. These clocks are objects which disappear; time is everywhere these days, in our pocket on a smartphone, on our screens, across our cities.

be the change

I often take part in conferences in France and abroad focusing on innovative practice. I have always pushed to question myself. It is what has helped me evolve and advance. It is like an internal force which makes me push my personal limits. My projects continue according to the people I meet, they branch out into every area and open new pathways.
