Art Cologne, beyond the convention center

Article
Despite having had a stable foothold on the market since 1967, Art Cologne is still innovating, with a number of new initiatives appearing in recent years, as well as the appearance of concurrent events — notably since the arrival of Daniel Hug, oft-credited with the revivification of the veteran fair.

The fourth edition of Kölner Liste will take place between April 28 and 30 just metres away from Art Cologne with 90 exhibitors occupying the 43,000-square-meter space. Curated by Guillaume Trotin from Openwalls gallery the fair features paintings, sculptures, installations and street art.

Street art features elsewhere in the city for its art week with a number of large billboards featuring the work of French street artist OX in partnership with the advertising company Ströer.

Housed in a former post office dating back to 1895 the fair saw 7000 visitors pass through their doors last year. Director Jörgen Golz sees the event as a networking opportunity for artists, collectors and visitors alike. Exhibitors include international galleries such as MSK Eastside from Russia with photographic works by Ja'bagh Kaghado; Galleria Contempo from Finland and Namibia’s Fine Art Gallery.

Kölner Liste stands apart from Art Cologne positioning itself at the other end of the price bracket with very affordable pieces, making it a credible alternative to its, older, larger, competitor.

The 51st edition of Art Cologne features a notable number of American artists with numerous pieces by George Condo, installations by Tony Oursler (at Galerie Hans Mayer), and works by Alex Katz on multiple stands. Photographs by Richard Prince and Helmut Newton are also available throughout the fair.

The local scene does not go unforgotten however, with work by Austrian artist Erin Wurm at König Galerie), whilst the German scene is represented by Günther Huecker, Georg Baselitz, Juergen Teller at various stands.

The section Film Cologne this year features the exhibition “Goth Life” curated by Daata Editions who are offering limited editions of works available as downloads. Around 20 artist videos, including work by Tracey Emin, have been compiled and are screened on loop, evoking the anguish of our internet age.

Elsewhere outside the fair there is a major retrospective of work by local artist Gerhard Richter at the Ludwig museum that is on display until May 1.
