The art world reacts to Donald Trump’s inauguration
It is fair to say that Donald Trump has been received pretty poorly by the vast majority of the art world. Following Richard Prince’s disavowal of his Ivanka Trump work, which the artist has dismissed as “fake art”, the art community continues to respond to what remains one of the most controversial elections to date.
Today, as he is inaugurated as president Trump, a group of artists and critics — including veterans such as Cindy Sherman and Mel Bochner and artist-activist groups like Occupy Museums — lead an “art strike” which calls for an “act of noncompliance” among American museums and galleries. The group asks museums to close their doors to the public in a rejection of “the normalization of Trumpism,” though most museums are either simply offering pay-what-you-wish entry or are open for business as usual.
