June 29 | Artistic director of Hyundai to curate Korean pavilion at Venice

Daehyung Lee, currently artistic director at Hyundai in Seoul, has been named as curator for the South Korean pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennial.

Lee made a name for herself having curated a series of exhibitions entitled “Korean Eye” (2009-2012) at the Saatchi Gallery in London and will present an exhibition of work by artists Lee Wan and Cody Choi and journalist Mr. K,in Venice next year. More information on Art Asia Pacific.

More proof that the London art market has not yet taken too great of a hit, Sotheby’s contemporary auction which took place on Tuesday evening saw the auction house surpass its high-end estimation of £49.9 million, realizing £52.2 million. A total of 89% of lots were sold, equal to 92% by value. The British artist Jenny Saville realized a new record for her 1996-7 work Shift which realized £6.8 million, from a £2 million pre-sale estimate; it was Chinese collector Liu Yiqian, of the Long Museum in Shanghai who pushed up bidding, tripling Saville’s pre-existing record. The MCH Group, the parent company of Art Basel, has announced their acquisition of Curiator, a site designed for users to present and share images of artworks. Created in 2014 by  Moenen Erbuer et Tobias Boonstoppel, the platform aims to “help users find art they might want to buy.” More on Art News.

German collector Thomas Borgmann has donated 600 works from his contemporary collection to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Among the bequest include works by Cosima von Bonin, Cerith Wyn Evans, Jack Goldstein, Jutta Koether, Lucy McKenzie, Paulina Olowska, Jorge Pardo, John Stezaker, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Christopher Williams.
