Gallerist Marian Goodman has been named as prizewinner of the 2016 Leo Award, presented by Independent Curators International.

The prize will be awarded during a charity auction on October 26 in New York. The award is an homage to Leo Castelli which recognizes “extraordinary commitment to artists and pioneering contributions to the field of contemporary art.” Former laureates include Michael Govan, Dimitris Daskalopoulos, Roy and Dorothy Lichtenstein, Miuccia Prada and Dasha Zhukova. A third evening of smooth sales in the Brexit capital, this time it was at Christie’s that auction results totalled £39.6 million, surpassing the pre-sale estimate for its Post-War and Contemporary art auction. An impressive 92% of lots found buyers, equal to 97% by value. The only disappointment of the evening was the non sale of Abstraktes Bild (811-2) (1994) by Gerhard Richter, whilst a Warhol Dollar Bill painting realized £4.5 million. Bloomberg reports.

The artist KG Subramanyan, considered to be one of the pioneers of Modern Indian art, passed away at the age of 92 on Wednesday. Painter, sculptor and author of children's’ books Subramanyan studied under artists Nandlal Bose, Ramkinkar Baij and Benode Bihari Mukherjee. In 2014 the artist participated in the Kochi Biennial. Details on Thaddaeus Ropac’s London gallery have been revealed. The new space is top open in spring 2017 at 37 Dover Street in Mayfair with a total surface of 1,500m2, under the direction of Polly Robinson Gaer. More via  Art Forum.

 

Spain’s supreme court has rejected a case brought by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation against a Barcelona exhibition producer, stating that the foundation “does not have the legal standing to protect the artist’s image.”The case came about following an exhibition of sculptures by the artist organised by the the Faber Gotic company at the Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona. The Foundation claims that the company and its owner Juan Javier Bofill Pellicer had infringed the trademark rights of the foundation, as well as intellectual copyright and image rights rules, having used the name and image of Dali on their posters.
