The MAIIAM Museum of Contemporary Art opened last Sunday in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The institution is the city’s first center for contemporary art.

Founded by Jean Michel Beurdeley, his late wife Patsri Bunnag and their son Eric Bunnag Booth, the 3,000 square foot museum — hosting the family’s contemporary art collection — debuted with an inaugural retrospective of the work of filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, titled “The Serenity of Madness”. New York’s Foundation for Contemporary Art (FCA) has revealed it has received a $1 million bequest from the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation. The gift, the largest in the institution’s history, contributed to the establishment of a new contemporary art award — the Ellsworth Kelly Award, supporting young and under-represented artists. Art Forum has more information.

Last week, Iranian artist Parviz Tanavoli saw his passport confiscated by the country’s authorities as he prepared to fly to London, where he was due to take part in “Magic of Persia: European women in Persian houses”, a special event at The British Museum. The Biennale of Sydney has annonced that Mami Kataoka has been appointed artistic director of its 21st edition, which will take place in 2018. Currently Chief Curator at the Mori Art Museum of Tokyo, Kataoka was chosen to bring a "truly fresh perspective and an Asian sensibility to the exhibition in 2018", as Kate Mills, president of the Biennale, has commented.
