Helena Newman, previously head of Impressionist and modern art at Sotheby’s Europe, has been appointed chairman of the company.

Since joining Sotheby’s in 1988, Newman has led several of the auction house’s most successful sales, including the February 2010 Impressionist and modern art sale, which realized £164.4 million, becoming Sotheby’s most profitable sale ever held in Europe. Newman will continue to serve as co-head of the auction house’s Impressionist and modernist division, and will join fellow chairmen Oliver Barker, Mario Tavella, and Philipp Württemberg. Art News has more information.

The 5th Athens Biennale — titled “OMONOIA” and currently under way — has lost two of its founding members. The biennale’s co-director, Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, and its program director, Massimiliano Mollona have in fact announced their resignations. Kalpaktsoglou will be replaced by visual artist Poka-Yio.According to a statement from the Biennale, OMONOIA is set to resume its program soon. Read more on artnet News.

British artist Michael Simpson is this year’s recipient of the $32,000 John Moores Painting Prize. The artist — whose work has been selected five times for the prize exhibition — won with his canvas Leper Squint 19, 2015. More information on Art Forum.

Iranian artist Parviz Tanavoli — whose passport was confiscated by border authorities at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport earlier this month as he prepared to fly to London — was accused of “disturbing the peace” by the Iranian police and is facing criminal charges. If convicted, Tanavoli may be fined or ordered to serve a prison sentence. More on Art Forum.
