July 22 | The Ford Foundation awards $120,000 grant to the MoCAD

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Detroit (MoCAD) has announced that it has received a $120,000 bequest from the Ford Foundation.

The sum will contribute to the establishment of two curatorial fellowships, beginning in January 2017. Art Forum has more information.

P.P.O.W, the New York gallery at 535 West 22nd Street — has revealed major expansion plans. The gallery will take over a 2,000 square foot space, which extends over three floors above P.P.O.W’s current exhibition space. The new three-floor area will welcome installations, exhibitions and a research space. It has also been announced that Trey Hollis, previously of New York’s Pavel Zoubok Gallery, will join P.P.O.W as associate director. Art News has more information.

Auction house Sotheby’s has released a report today highlighting strong sales on the Asian market for the first semester of the year. Auction sales over the last six months have fetched $461.5 million, showing a 22% increase compared to last year. An 80% rate of sold lots also attest to the impressive growth of the auction house’s sales in Asia. artnet News has more.

Following a streak of legal battles centering around the rightful ownership of L’Homme Assis and impressive sales at Sotheby’s earlier this year, the non-profit organization the Modigliani Project — founded by Modigliani scholar Kenneth Wayne — has announced plans to create a catalogue raisonné of the artist’s oeuvre. An impressive group of curators and experts — including Brigitte Léal, the deputy director of the Centre Pompidou; Sophie Krebs, the chief curator of the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris; and Cécile Girardeau, a curator at the Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris — will work on the project, led by Michel Menu, the chief conservator of the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France, Paris. The San Francisco Asian Art Museum has also revealed plans for expansion — the institution has announced that it will add a twelve-thousand-square-foot space to its current exhibition space, for a $25 million expansion. Construction will begin early next year. More on Art Forum.
