July 28 | Chinese life insurance company Taikang invests in Sotheby’s

The Chinese life insurance company Taikang Life Insurance Co. will join Sotheby’s roster of shareholders, revealing that it has acquired a 13.5% active stake in the auction house, thus becoming Sotheby’s largest shareholder.

Taikang Life is run by Chen Dongsheng — who also founded China Guardian, currently the world’s fourth-largest art auction house — who has cited an interest in the auction house’s strategic initiatives and who may also seek board representation. More information is available via Bloomberg.

Taipei Fine Arts Museum has announced that performance artist Tehching Hsieh will represent Taiwan at the 57th edition of the Venice Biennale, taking place between May 13 and November 26, 2017. Taiwan’s pavilion, which will be housed in the iconic Palazzo delle Prigioni of the Italian city, will be curated by Adrian Heathfield. Hsieh is known for his six year-long performance pieces completed between 1978 and 2000, such as Tehching Hsieh 1986–1999 (Thirteen Year Plan). More details on Art News.

Robert Miller Gallery, founded in 1977 by art dealer Robert Miller and his wife, has announced that it is closing its Chelsea space at West 26th Street, where it had been operating for fifteen years. The gallery, which worked with some of the most prominent artists of the last decades — including Yayoi Kusama, Ai Weiwei, Louise Bourgeois, David Hockney and Leon Kossoff — will now only keep its private showroom on the Upper East Side, which was also put on the market in March 2015. Art News has more information.

The London Legacy Development Corporation, responsible for the construction of Victoria and Albert Museum's new building, has revealed design plans for the London institution’s new outpost, the V&A East. The new museum,  designed by London–based firm Allies and Morrison and Irish architects O’Donnell + Tuomey, will be constructed in East London on a former olympic site and will cover a 194,000 square foot surface over seven stories. Ngahiraka Mason has been appointed curator of the first edition of the The Honolulu Biennial, due to take place between March 8 and May 8, 2017 and titled “Middle of Now / Here”. Mason has worked for over two decades as curator of Indigenous Art at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki in New Zealand. Art Forum has more information.
