October 19 | Pecci Center for Contemporary Art opens sleek new extension

Article
The Pecci Center for Contemporary Art in Prato has reopened its doors to the public to unveil a €14.5 million extension designed by Dutch architect Maurice Nio, making it the only contemporary art institution in Italy to inaugurate a new building in the whole of the 2010-2020 period.

Nio’s extension has doubled the museum’ exhibition space, which now spans a total area of over 10,000 square meters. The exhibition “The End of the World”, inauguration the building and curated by the museum’s director Fabio Cavallucci, showcases work by a group of over 50 international artists, including big names such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Umberto Boccioni, and Lucio Fontana. Kader Attia — who earlier this week opened his new Paris-based art space La Colonie — has been awarded the 2016 Prix Marcel Duchamp. Established in 2000 by the Association for the International Diffusion of French Art (ADIAF) in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou, the prize gives an international spotlight to French contemporary art, awarding this year’s winner with €35,000. Barthélémy Toguo, Yto Barrada and Ulla von Brandenburg — the three other finalists who along with Attia will receive exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou — all share a dual cultural identity, a political statement by the jury at a time of rising anti-immigration sentiment in France. The Art Newspaper has more.

Hammad Nasa has been selected to curate the UAE’s national pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, in what will be the country’s fifth presence at the event. Nasa is Head of Research and Programmes at Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong and also co-founder of London-based non-profit organization Green Cardamom, which focuses on art from South Asia. His exhibition hopes to stage a conversation between projects by UAE-based contemporary artists. More info on artdaily.
