October 5 | Frieze auction week gets underway with white-glove sale

Article
Frieze London’s week of art auctions has kicked off with Christie’s sale of the private collection of Leslie Waddington, the famed Cork Street dealer of Modern and contemporary art, which realized £28.3 million for the 44 lots sold.

The total of the white-glove auction greatly exceeded the pre-sale estimate of between £11.9 million and £18.5 million, though these figures do not reflect the buyer’s premium that is added on for each lot sold. The sale began with Peter Blake’s homage to Waddington in oil-on-canvas, Leslie Waddington with Portrait of a Young Man by Hans Memling (1999), which fetched £81,250, almost triple the high estimate. Francis Picabia’s Lampe (c. 1923) racked up one of the higher totals, bringing in £3,637,000, but was topped by Jean Dubuffet’s Visiteur au Chapeau Bleu, which took the top lot, selling for £4,813,000.
