New York sales | Good, but not impressive, results at Sotheby’s and Phillips

Sotheby’s New York sale of Contemporary Art realized $310.3 million last night — with only 3 out of the 72 lots offered going unsold — reflecting its pre-sale estimates. ($250.5 million — $343.5 million) The sale was led by a tryptich by Francis Bacon, titled Three studies of George Dyer, which sold for $38.6 million, including buyer’s premium. An Andy Warhol portrait of Mao fetched $32.4 million, whereas Spider IV by Louise Bourgeois won $14.7 million. The evening also saw the sale of a 2001 Ferrari, driven by Michael Schumacher during the Monaco Grand Prix in the same year. The sports car sold for $7.5 million. A new record was set for American painter Laura Owens, whose Untitled (2012) realized $1.76 million — smashing the artist’s previous auction record, which stood at $360,500.  More via Artnet.

Over at Phillips, the $113.9 million-strong Contemporary Art sale was led by Peter Doig’s Red House (1995-1996), which sold for $21.1 million. In 2008, the same work sold for 1.83 million (or $3.17 million according to the 2008 pound to dollar conversion rate) at Christie’s London. Surprising to most, Picasso’s drawing Portrait de femme endormie. III (1946) sold for $9.32 million, almost 9 times its pre-sale estimate of $1.5 million.

A new record was set for artist Carmen Herrera, whose Untitled (Orange and Black) (1956) fetched $1.18 million. Read more on Artnews.
