As it’s often the case, another big brand seems to have overlooked the significance of copyright in one of their marketing campaigns. In other news, the 2018 art world calendar is taking shape, whilst Damien Hirst is reconsidering some of his business ventures.

Lygia Pape’s daughter files lawsuit against LG

Lygia Pape’s (1927-2004) daughter has filed a lawsuit in Manhattan’s federal court against technology colossus LG Electronics Inc.

The company has allegedly used one of Pape’s works — Tteia 1 — without permission for the marketing campaign for LG’s K20 V model. Pape’s work had been presented at London’s Serpentine Galleries in 2011. More via Bloomberg.



 

Prizes

The PinchukArtCentre Prize — supporting Ukrainian artists under 35 — has announced that the 2018 jury will consist of artist and curator Andrij Bojarov, PinchukArtCentre Prize curator and art historian Tatiana Kochubinska, art historian and PinchukArtCentre member Ksenia Malykh, artist, curator and writer Tiberiy Szilvashi and art historian and curator Yulia Vaganova. 

The prize’s winner will be announced in March 2018 — and they will also automatically be shortlisted for the 2019 edition of the Future Generation Art Prize. Read more on Artdaily.

Sydney’s Biennial announces program ahead of 2018 edition

Next year’s edition of the Sydney Biennial — running from March 16 through June 11, 2018 — will have the theme of “SUPERPOSITION:  Art of Equilibrium and Engagement”.


The idea is to delve into “the concept of superposition in quantum mechanics as a metaphor to link the notions of equilibrium and engagement and provide us with insights into the world today”, explains artistic director Mami Kataoka. Among the participating artists are: Oliver Beer,  Laurent Grasso, N.S. Harsha, Ai Weiwei and Samson Young. More information via Artforum.

Damien Hirst’s Devon gallery will shut its doors

Other Criteria, Damien Hirst’s boutique/gallery in Ilfracombe, (Devon) which had been working with “emerging and established artists, to produce prints, books and limited edition works”, will cease to operate as a gallery and will become “Other Criteria Books”, specializing only in specialist art books.
