Exciting news coming from the Tate! Joan Jones and Anni Albers to feature in two solo shows in 2018 at the Tate Modern, whilst Tate Britain debuts All Too Human, which will feature London-based artists from the second half of the 20th century, including Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon. Meanwhile, there's trouble in Italy with courts making an unprecedented decision to halt the appointment of five museum directors. It seems Skype calls aren’t substantial enough to secure such prestigious positions...

The Tate announces 2018 exhibition programming

The Tate has announced its exhibition programme for next year across its four locations.

At the Tate Modern two of its three upcoming solo shows will feature women artists: Joan Jonas runs March through August, followed by Anni Albers from October through January (2019) while a Picasso show entitled “Picasso 1932: Love, Fame, Tragedy” will run from March through until September.

The Tate Britain will feature the group shows “All Too Human: Bacon, Freud and a Century Of Painting” from the end of February through August and “Aftermath: Art in the Wake of WWI” from June through September. Tate St Ives will run a group show of 35 women artists from January through May, centered on the writings of Virginia Woolf, followed by a solo show of work by British artist Patrick Heron from May through September. While Tate Liverpool will present solo shows by Egon Schiele, Fernand Léger and Dia Al-Azzawi. More via The Art Newspaper.

Prix Marcel Duchamp to internationalize

In a bid to raise its international profile, France’s leading contemporary art prize the Prix Marcel Duchamp is to organise three overseas exhibitions at the Red Brick Art Museum in Beijing, the Times Museum in Guangzhou and at the Whitechapel Gallery in London with the help of the Association for the International Diffusion of French Art (ADIAF).

The exhibitions in China will showcase the work of eight artists selected from the 16 winners over the years whilst the Whitechapel gallery will feature a solo show of work by the artist Ulla von Brandenburg, one of the prize’s 2016 nomies. More via The Art Newspaper.

Expo Chicago reveals its 2017 exhibitors list

Following a long-lived hiatus, Gagosian Gallery is to exhibit at this year’s EXPO CHICAGO, while other new exhibitor’s to the fair’s 2017 edition include Tina Kim Gallery (New York); STANDARD (Oslo); Anton Kern Gallery (New York); Ceysson & Bénétière (Saint-Étienne, Paris, Luxembourg, New York); Galerie Laurent Godin (Paris); Galerija Gregor Podnar, (Berlin); Mariane Ibrahim, (Seattle) and Galeria Filomena Soares (Lisbon).

The event is billed as the “most global edition to date” with 135 participants hailing from 58 different international cities, running from September 13 to 17. Find the full list of participants here.

 

 

Italian court judges the appointment of 5 new museum directors as invalid

Following Italian Minister for Culture Dario Franceschini’s 2015 recruitment drive to hire 20 new museum directors across the country, five of the directorial appointments have since been deemed invalid. The posts concerned are at the Palazzo Ducale museum in Mantua as well as museums in Naples, Taranto, Reggio Calabria, and Modena. The tribunal took place after the selection process was criticized for its lack of transparency and Skype interviews considered to be insufficient. Franceschini will contest the ruling. Mario Testino to auction art collection to raise money for Peruvian gallery

The fashion photographer Mario Testino has announced that he will auction off 400 works including pieces by Wolfgang Tillmans, Gilbert & George and Nan Goldin in order to raise money for the Museo Mate, an art gallery that he established in his hometown of Lima in 2012. The auction, which will take place at Sotheby’s in September, is estimated to realize around £8 million which will go towards the maintenance of the Mate which the photographer established in order to give an international platform to Peruvian artists. The Guardian reports.
