May 26 | Riopelle explodes at auction

Article
It is hard to keep up with art auction records these days, with last week’s gigaweek in New York totting up a staggering $1.6 billion worth of art exchanged — seeing three auction houses squeeze 11 sales of Impressionist, Modern, postwar and contemporary art into just five days. However it seems Jean-Paul Riopelle from Quebec has surprised audiences far and wide with the $ 7.4 million sale of his Vent du nord (1952-1953).

Riopelle smashes Canadian records

An abstract canvas by Jean-Paul Riopelle, Vent du nord (1952-1953) went on sale last Wednesday at Heffel Fine Art in Vancouver. Reaching a record $ 7.4 million Canadian dollars, the work went for almost ten times its low estimate ($ 990,000) and five times its high estimate ($ 1,500,000). Vent du nord stands as the second most expensive work by a Canadian artist to be sold at auction. Details via The Art Newspaper.

However they have also participated in many others, including the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, the 8th Gwangju Biennale, Manifesta 7 in 2008, the 6th Mercosul Biennial in 2007 and the 27th Biennale of Sao Paulo in 2006.
