New York mayor to dedicate city’s arts budget to smaller municipal institutions
According to The New York Times, NYC mayor Bill de Blasio and his lieutenants are reexamining the city’s $178 million arts budget in order to give prominence to smaller institutions across the city — as opposed to the current favouring of Manhattan institutions. The reassessment of funding comes in the wake of Trump’s threat to erase the National Endowment for the Arts, leaving some institutions concerned for their financial future. Van Doren Waxter and 11R galleries merge
New York gallery Van Doren Waxter has announced it will merge with its Lower East Side affiliate 11R — the new gallery will be known as Van Doren Waxter. Opened in 2007, 11R focuses on emerging artists who have not yet had significant exposure in the US.
The gallery will encompass the existing locations on 23 East 73rd Street and 195 Chrystie Street, with John Van Doren and Dorsey Waxter serving as principals and 11R founder Augusto Arbizo and Elizabeth Sadeghi becoming partners of the gallery. More information via artnet news.

Sotheby’s launches $250,000 Prize for museums
The auction house has announced that it is launching a $250,000 prize dedicated to supporting new museum exhibitions and curatorial initiatives.
Developed by chairmen Robin Woodhead and Allan Schwartzman, the award will be available to curators, institutions and museum directors and will allow to realize what the auction house has defined as “trailblazing, potentially landscape-changing, projects in the cultural field”. The jury, chaired by Schwartzman, includes big names such as Nicholas Serota, Okwui Enwezor as well as Connie Butler, (Director of the Haus der Kunst museum in Munich), and Donna de Salvo (Senior Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York).
