April 25 | New cross-platform art production studio set up in LA

Tapping into the LA’s studio production vibe, Lauri Firstenberg has embarked on a new initiative — ‘there-there’. The arts production studio hopes to fill a gap, where the closing down of galleries has seen artists struggle to harmonise the production of their work with its exhibition. In other news, Hiroshi Senju wins the 2017 Isamu Noguchi Award, whilst the American Academy in Rome announces its residency fellowships.

Lauri Firstenberg, founder of LAXART, sets up new production studio in LA

After stepping-down from her role as director of LAXART, Lauri Firstenberg has embarked upon a new art production studio, ‘there-there’, in partnership with Los Angeles–based artist Anthony James. The project will serve in an advisory capacity, funding artists and helping them produce work, whilst also exhibiting work in a gallery space built into its East Hollywood headquarters.

Speaking to ARTNEWS, Firstenberg revealed “we have tried to create a new model that’s hybridic… We’ll be sitting down with artists and seeing what their priorities are, seeing what is missing in terms of what they can do within the context of their own studios, and what is outside of traditional gallery priorities.”

Located next-door to the iconic Church of Scientology building, offices will be housed in an Art Deco build on Fountain Avenue — to open this spring, with fresh programming for September.
