Bonhams have fired Deputy Chairman of Asia, Magnus Renfrew along with seven other Hong-Kong-based employees in light of the market drop in Asia. Bonhams will keep on a team of 18 employees in Hong Kong despite fierce competition in the region from Christie’s, Sotheby’s and mainland auctioneers China Guardian Auctions Co as well as a tough market climate.

Christie’s have filed a motion against Jose Mugrabi and the family’s Jombihis Corporation following a non-payment for Jean-Michel’s Basquiat’s The Field Next to the Other Road bought at auction in May 2015 for upwards of $37 million. So far the family have paied only $5 million towards the total sum. More on Art Market Monitor.

Francis Bacon’s final painting has been found. Study of a bull, created in 1991, is thought to be the last work created by the artist and was discovered by Martin Harrison on February 23. Harrison has been working on a catalogue raisonné of Bacon for over a decade. Full article can be found on The Guardian.

The Director General of the Rijksmuseum, Wim Pijbes is to step down from his post this summer in order to take the reigns at a new museum, the Museum Voorlinden to be opened by multi-millionaire collector Joop van Caldenborgh in Wassenaar in July. The Art Newspaper has more on Pijbes’ illustrious career at the Rijksmuseum. 

Bernar Venet has been named the first French artist to win the Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the International Sculpture Center in New York. Kiki Smith was also awarded the ICS’ Lifetime Achievement Award. More on the two artists can be found on via the ISC.
