Philipp Kaiser from Berne, Switzerland — now based in Los Angeles — has been named curator of the Swiss Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale. The Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia has released a statement declaring that “the biennial’s jury based their decision on Philipp Kaiser’s impressive accomplishments as a curator, notably his monographic and thematic exhibitions with both public and private collections which create bridges between Europe and America.”

Last year Pamela Rosenkranz was selected to represent Switzerland, with Suzanne Pfeffer as curator. Pferrer will this year curate Germany’s Venice presentation. More info can be found on the Pro Helvetia site.

The Estate of Franz West is proving ever more complex. Five days prior to his death in 2012, Franz West had created a private foundation in Vienna, an act which meant diverting all assets from the Franz West Archives, therefore denying his wife and children a considerable inheritance. Legal battles have since raged, but a conclusion seemed to be nearing, with West’s widow, Tamuna Sirbiladze, looking set to receive 50% of the estate, however just this week Sirbiladze died suddenly of cancer leaving the situation once again at a lose end. The Art Newspaper explains the details.

The Team Gallery, with two spaces in Soho, New York and another in Los Angeles, is to downsize, leaving its Wooster Street location after five years. The reason for the closure is, unsurprisingly, the cost of rising rents in the area, with the new lease at $50,000 per month, that is double what the gallery has been paying up until now. More info via ArtNews.
