June 9 | The Garage Museum to launch Russia’s first ever contemporary art biennial

“Just as the Revolution encouraged Russia’s first avant-garde, Garage hopes to spur the next.” With these words, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow, has announced the launch of the country’s first ever contemporary art biennale.

The first edition will take place in March 2017 — 100 years after the Russian Revolution. Kate Fowle, curator in chief at the Garage Museum, will be in charge of the biennale, and will work alongside Katya Inozemtseva, Snejana Krasteva, Andrey Misiano et Sasha Obukhova. Gregor Muir, executive director of London’s Institute of Contemporary art, (ICA) has been appointed director of Tate’s international collection. Muir will succeed Frances Morris, who has occupied the post since 2006 and who was named director Tate Modern last January. Director of Hauser & Wirth (London) from 2004 to 2011, Muir will assume his new post in January 2017. More on Art Forum.

Absolut has announced the Jury for the 2017 edition of its annual prize, awarding visual artists and art writers. The jury, composed of Elena Filipovic, chief curator of Kunstahalle Basel, Jack Bankowsky, curator and editor-at-large of Art Forum, Polly Staple, director of London’s Chisenhale Gallery and Simon Castets, director and curator at New York’s Swiss Institute, will be presided by Stockholm’s Moderna Museet director Daniel Birnbaum. The winner of the Art Work category will be awarded €120,000, divided into a €20,000 cash prize and a €100,000 prize towards the completion of their proposed project. The organisation has also announced the establishment of an “Emerging Artist Award”, for artists under 40 who have collaborated with the brand since 2015. More on artnet News.

From June 9 through July 11, East Tower — the former premises of BBC in London — will host an exhibition comprising the work of eight artists, including Hilary Powell, James Rigler and Alan Warburton. The former BBC headquarters will also welcome an in situ installation by artist Catherine Yass, a 2002 Turner Prize nominee, where a piano will be suspended across the façade of the building. The artworks were commissioned by White Noise, the network of writers and culture professionals. The Art Newspaper has more information.
